LWHRA will accept cancellations received on or before ten (10) days prior to the event. Registrants who cancel on or before ten (10) days prior to the event will receive a refund, less $25 processing fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations received after ten (10) days prior to the event. A substitute attendee will be permitted given the LWHRA office receives notice of the substitution on or before ten (10) days prior to the event. After ten (10) days prior to the event, the following conversion fees will apply:

  • Event registrations $100 or greater = $25 substitution fee.
  • Event registrations less than $100 = $10 substitution fee.

Presentation Descriptions:

Remember the good ol' days of Washington Paid Sick Leave? Well strap in and get ready to rocket into a new year! Not only will you be riding the Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave roller coaster, but you also have a slate of new laws and court decisions from 2019 to incorporate into your 2020 HR practices. In this session, Jodi and Kara will focus your thoughts and tighten your buckles. 


Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the numerous laws passed by the 2019 Washington Legislature...and what requires your immediate attention
  • Educate C-Suite and supervisors on recent decisions that expand the scope of harassment liability 
  • Determine if your salaried employees meet the federal and (proposed) state thresholds...and what to do if they don't
  • Check your pay practices regarding travel, after-hours, and piece-rate
  • Revise company disability accommodation practices that happen before, during and after employment

2nd Session:

Washington will be the 5th state to offer paid family and medical leave benefits starting in 2020, but employers have action to take in 2019.  Learn how your business can implement this mandatory program and prepare for employees using Paid Family and Medical Leave starting in 2020.


Learning Objectives:

  • Learn the employee benefits of WA's Paid Family and Medical Leave Program 
  • Learn the employer requirements of the program
  • Learn program updates as we prepare to launch benefits in January 2020

*If the registration deadline has passed, you are welcome to arrive at the venue at 7:00 AM and enter your name on the waiting list. We will accommodate walk-ins whenever space is available. The onsite registration fee is $100 for LWHRA members and $115 for non-members. Note that only the regular meal is available to walk-ins, and the fee must be paid on site.

Speaker Bios:

Kara Craig is an energetic presenter and seasoned attorney, having practiced law for 18 years.  As an employment attorney with Vigilant, Kara provides counsel to Oregon and Washington State businesses on the entire range of employment and labor law issues.  Kara takes pride in her ability to provide practical advice and draw from her extensive litigation experience when making risk assessments.  Hopefully, you’ll find Kara’s down-to-earth nature and sense of humor refreshing as we tackle the tricky and sometimes frustrating world of employment law!

 

 

 

Jodi Slavik proudly provides counsel to Washington State businesses on a suite of employment issues, including handbook development, internal investigations, administrative complaint responses, leave tracking, and wage and hour compliance.  Her goal is to help employers sleep at night by giving them immediate, relatable, and realistic advice to the stickiest employee problems. As Vigilant's Strategic Services Director, Jodi is also responsible for stability and growth of major accounts, as well as ensuring unparalleled service for Vigilant member companies.

 

 

Matt LaPalm is a communications and outreach specialist in the Paid Family and Medical Leave team at the Employment Security Department. With a background in small and medium sized businesses, he knows how challenging implementing a new state program can be. Matt has presented about Paid Family and Medical Leave at more than 100 events in the last year and can help your business prepare for benefits to begin in 2020.

Curiosity led Matt to an undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Montana before finding a career in marketing and analytics. Matt grew up in Olympia but spent the last 18 years in Montana before returning to the greatest state in the union
